The Benefits of Chewing Gum

Mr. Martin should allow chewing gum!

Everybody has those days when you don’t have time to do anything, and you’re just running late. Chewing gum is the best and quickest way to freshen up your breath. But gum doesn’t only have one benefit, it has multiple benefits. One way chewing gum can improve your everyday life is that gum burns 11 calories an hour, so by just chewing you’re losing weight! But keep in mind that if your gum contains sugar, then the positive effects may be canceled out, and chewing gum isn’t doing anything. Sugar-free gum has less than 0.5 grams of sugar per serving and uses alternative sweeteners. Gum labels may mention sweeteners like Acesulfame-K, Aspartame, Neotame, Saccharin, Sucralose, Erythritol, Isomalt, Maltitol, Mannitol, Sorbitol, and Xylitol. If your gum uses certain flavorings like citric acid, it may lower plaque buildup in your mouth. Chewing triggers your mouth to make more saliva. This protects your mouth from decay and erosion because saliva acts as a buffer for your teeth. More saliva may carry away bacteria and acid that build up on your teeth. Gum may also help with dry mouth, at least for a short time. But as with reflux, it’s not a cure.‌ If you want to find the right chewing gum, look for a seal of approval from the American Dental Association (ADA). These gums are verified by a panel of scientists who review the ingredients.‌ The ADA seal does not mean that chewing gum can replace brushing your teeth, flossing, and using mouthwash daily.
